Resumen
The effect of periodontitis on diabetes may be explained by increased levels of systemic proinflammatory mediators, which exacerbate insulin resistance. The objective of this systematic review was to determine whether nonsurgical treatment of periodontitis in patients with diabetes mellitus 2 improves serum glycosylated hemoglobin levels. The protocol was designed according to Cochrane standards for systematic reviews. The search criteria complied with PRISMA guidelines. A total of 226 studies were analyzed of which 9 randomized clinical studies were included. Non-surgical periodontal treatment could be beneficial in the long term in glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
