Resumen
We report a 32 year-old woman with a syndrome of neuromyelitis optica (Devic's disease) in whom MRI showed atrophy and changes on the signal properties of the cervical spinal cord. Brain MRI was normal and there were no oligoclonal bands on CSF. Steroid therapy did not improve the clinical course which was punctuated by spontaneous relapses and remissions. Devic's disease should be considered as a nosological entity distinct from multiple sclerosis. In this condition, the spinal cord damage is necrotizing rather than demyelinating.
